Harper is the Devil?

What's with everyone being so damn quick to demonize this guy? Everyone I've tried to have a conversation with about the newly appointed PM (by a majority of the country I might add kids) has seemed ready to cruicify Harper personally! I'm serious! Give these people a hammer and some 2 by 4's and I seriously think they'd be leading the charge with torches and pitch fork's in hand!
There are two things they tend to latch on to like a bulldog on a t-bone: The first is womens rights and the question of abortion; The second is gay rights and the question of gay marriage.
Personally I'm pro-choice on the first and indifferent on the second. So there, everyone knows where I stand.
But this makes me a horrible person because I have aparently voted for the Devil incarnate! Oh lordy lordy run for the hills it's the 3rd coming of the Apocalypse! Do people not realise that the more controversial issues like abortion and gay marriage are going to be squashed in a heartbeat simply because the Conservatives have a minority? Not to mention that I believe most of the frigging country positively supports these issues!! INCLUDING PEOPLE THAT MAY HAVE VOTED FOR THE CONSERVATIVES! (*gasp all around!*)
Believe it or not I was cheering for the NDP in the short strokes of the election results. I was hoping that the NDP could gain enough seats so that they could hold the "balance of power" as they're calling it. They'd keep the Conservatives in check on the social issues such as health care and human rights, but they wouldn't have enough power to overrule some of the drastic changes to the government that are needed. Now Gilles Duceppe is strutting around like a christmas turkey thinking he's got all the marbles. I hate to tell you Gilles, but Harpers going to talk to the Liberals before he goes anywhere near you. I personally think that having a party in the federal election who's goal is to separate from the rest of the country is borderline treason. Treason is a word that isn't used often enough these days.
It seems that so many people these days are losing touch of what made this country strong in the first place. And honestly, I think it has F&*K ALL to do with what party was in power. People come to the country and work hard, they make a good life for themselves. How hard is that to figure out? Handouts don't make a country great.
Grr... It's too early in the morning to be getting my blood pressure up like this. For over a decade corruption and broken promises has been the norm. WHY is this acceptable to so many? I'm starting to think that maybe a lot of people in this country are afraid of change.
My only hope is that the opposing parties don't get their knickers in a twist before Harper's had a chance to do something good for this country.

I'm sure I'm going to share more later, but this is all I can spit out before I've had coffee.

Here are some problems with the Conservative approach that are not just about abortion and gay rights.

Cutting the GST cuts a serious, SERIOUS, chunk of the government revenue. Now I realize that with some of the trimming in gov't that Harper wants to do, he might save SOME money, but no way he'll save what he wants to when he cuts the GST.

Second, the $1200 handout (I stress HANDOUT) he wants to give families for daycare is a joke. First, it barely covers anything. Second, it's fucking taxable! It counts as income, and with the income tax as it is, means they get dick all. Martin, on the other hand, wanted to keep the GST as is, and use some of the money they have saved/budgeted to actually implement a REAL child care system.

Third, the decentralization of the federal gov't is not necessarily a fantastically awesome thing. I would likely be persuaded of somethings, but certainly not all. The Fed gov't unites Canada, and to take power away from it takes away from a united Canada (arguably at least).

Fourth, well mebbie I don't have a fourth. But I'll note this. A Conservative candidate made a Jesus comment. Saying that Jesus only asked the men to follow as he knew the women would just follow the men. Ex-fucking-cuse me, but these are not the people we want representing our country in any form.

Fifth, that's enough.

Although the Cons may not get much done while in power, if they do well this time around by doing 'decent' things that all parties are likely to agree on, then support for them is likely to grow as people start to think 'Hey, that Harper dude isn't so bad, look at all this decent shit he's done'. This poses HUGE problems for the next election. Con minority this time, Con majority next time? Then we have a problem because then, then they can start with the shit that us Liberal or Leftist folk get uptight about.

That, my friend, is why Harper is the devil.

Why the Conservatives should not run the country, with specific emphasis on Craig's point #4...

! The following are quotes from conservative candidates in the 2006 federal election !

Name: Mr. David Sweet (Elected, 39.12 %)
Riding: Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale
Quote: "There's a particular reason why Jesus called men only. It's not that women aren't co-participators. It's because Jesus knew women would naturally follow."

Name: Mr. Rondo Thomas (not elected)
Riding: Ajax-Pickering
Quote: (this quote relates to his stance against gay rights, with regards to marriage dating back to Adam and Eve) "That's about 6,000 years ago, for those of you who might not be aware"

Name: Mr. Harold Albrecht (Elected, 41.22 %)
Riding: Kitchener-Conestoga
Quote: "...These same-sex marriages would succeed in wiping out an entire society in just one generation."

! the following ares exerpt from the toronto star !

"For the first time in many years they (voters) have a choice between the radical agenda of the liberal elite, an agenda that will result in legal prostitution, legal brothels and legal drugs — and a leader loyal to common-sense values," writes Charles McVety in the current issue of Evangelical Christian Magazine.

"We will influence policy conferences, We will affect nomination meetings, We will decide elections," states the website for Concerned Christians Canada.

While I imagine the Conservatives will try to impact some positive measures upon the country, because that is now Steven Harper's job, religion and religious beliefs are not the solution, nor should they be forced upon the rest of the counry. I'm not saying all Conservative candidates, or those who voted Conservative are crazy religious people who will impose their beliefs upon others... but, if my favorite morning radio show hosts (Edge102 of course) are not allowed to use the word "chicks" when refering to people of female gender, then WHY THE HELL are people in positions of power allowed to sprout religious nonsense and publicly degrade groups of people, and STILL have a say in how Canada is run?

Where's the justice?

Oh, and Jack, the Conservatives won with 36.25%....
in terms of total votes, they won by 5,370,903 of 14,815,680 votes cast.
by ridings, they won by 124 of 308 ridings....
Now Jack... I know you went through 4 years of engineering school... so could you possibly explain to me, how by any means of counting, the,(and I quote your blog) "majority of the country" (end quote) voted for the Conservatives?

...

Thats what I thought.

I love my friends, I really do, for 2 very good reasons:
1 - they keep me honest
2 - they're often smarter than me

SUUURE you guys couldn't just let me have my way :p Now I have to go and actually do some research before I can reply with anything that sounds slightly more educated than "well...you're a stupid head!"
